Redefine Aging – Tips on Senior Fitness

Today, Americans are living longer and making the most of their retirement years. In fact, Baby Boomers are redefining aging, and are typically not willing to sit in a porch swing and watch the world go by. Many are finding the key to a happy, healthy, longer life can be found in exercise. Exercise, even moderate, is crucial in everyone’s life, but especially as we get older. After all, it’s been proven that the most debilitating issue in a person’s health as they age is living a sedentary life. By not exercising on a regular basis, a person can actually be setting themselves up for broken bones, circulation problems caused by atrophying blood vessels, and a variety of other problems. Exercise on the other hand improves mobility, digestive processes, and aging.

Redefine Aging With these Chiropractic Tips

Now just because it’s important to exercise, doesn’t mean that you have to run out and join a gym. A little bit here and there on a routine basis can make all the difference. In fact, the ACA recommends that starting with something as simple as a walk on a regular basis to get some tremendous health benefits. Walking increases the elasticity in blood vessels, which is crucial as we age. Not to mention it’s good for your heart and so many other vital processes. Start small, think maybe one-third to a half a mile in the beginning. You can even measure the distance in your car. Walk three days a week for a month, and then double the distance. The ultimate goal is to work up to a least one mile a day, three days a week.

Stretching is also a great way to get some exercise in, and it’s important to do as we get older to prevent the bowing or stoop that is actually caused by the shortening of the ligaments. You can stretch your muscles by sitting on the floor and bending one leg to the side and back as far as possible. Or you can sit Indian-style on a cushion on the floor to watch TV. Ultimately, a relaxed stretch is a goal.

You can take the stretching one step further and stretch your back leg muscles by putting your hands on a wall with one foot flat on the floor behind you. Simply lean into the wall and you can feel the stretch. You can also work your back leg muscles by standing up straight and bending over.
