We are pleased to announce that we have formed a specialized division offering Spinal Decompression Therapy to Joplin area residents suffering from disc herniations.
Spinal Decompression Therapy has been clinically proven for pain associated with herniated or bulging discs. It is a safe, drug-free, non-surgical approach increasingly used to treat chronic pain. The therapy will allow Dr. Carlson and his team to provide non-traumatic treatment interventions when manipulation is not advisable.
Spinal Decompression Therapy uses computerized traction therapy for the relief of back and leg pain or neck and arm pain by cycling through distraction and relaxation phases. By proper positioning, a spinal disc can be isolated and placed under negative pressure, causing a vacuum effect within it. The vacuum effect allows the disc component – that has protruded or herniated outside the normal confines of the disc – to be pulled back within the disc.
“The most exciting aspect of Spinal Decompression Therapy is the clinical studies that document its efficacy,” Dr. Carlson said. “One study reported the reduction of disc herniations –documented by MRI – in the majority of cases and another study reported that the majority of ruptured disc patients achieved good to excellent results after Spinal Decompression Therapy.”
Spinal Decompression Therapy is different from regular traction approaches as the computer provides greater accuracy. In fact, the computer controls the variations in the traction pull allowing for spinal decompression that eliminates muscle guarding that is typical in conventional traction devices. The preprogrammed patterns for ramping up and down the amount of axial distraction allows for higher levels of spinal decompression and disc rehydration. The new therapy provides the doctors at Carlson Chiropractic Center with more options when it comes to treating patients with back or neck pain, sciatica, bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, worn spinal joints, and other spinal issues.
“We chose the Kennedy Decompression system after a significant amount of research,” Dr. Carlson added. “With its unparalleled design and proven history, the Kennedy system is the ‘gold standard’ in decompressive therapy. We also selected this system because it can treat discs in the neck and low back.”
